Rotherham Anti-Bullying Awards Ceremony 2019

National Anti-Bullying Week - Change Starts with Us!

On Thursday 14th November 2019, 39 Rotherham Schools were presented with certificates for either Bronze, Silver or Gold Level of the Anti-Bullying Award. Over 200 children and young people attended the event representing their schools at Wales High School, a Gold Award Winning School who hosted the Awards Ceremony.

For the past 5 years The Anti-Bullying Company has worked in partnership with Rotherham School’s Improvement Service, providing Anti-Bullying training, support and education. As part of that, schools are encouraged to apply for different levels of The Rotherham Anti-Bullying Award.

Schools who were awarded Gold shared their excellence and examples of good practice of Anti-Bullying work on the day. Wales High School students presented their team of specially trained Mental Health Ambassadors and shared how they promote positive mental health and wellbeing to their students.

Students from Rotherham College Performing Arts wrote and performed an original, emotive and interactive drama play focused around the theme of the week ‘Change Starts with Us’. They encouraged attendees to feedback their suggestions on how they could positively impact bullying scenarios and then performed the revised version.

The event included a creative activity where students were encouraged to “bee the change” and make an anti-bullying pledge. Students coloured in honeybees, wrote their pledges and fitted them together to create a collaborative piece of art. This work will be displayed at the Rotherham School’s Improvement Service office.

As part of Anti-Bullying Week, on Tuesday last week, Governors at Anston Park Junior School also presented pupils with a buddy bench, intended to foster friendship and kindness towards each other.

'I was absolutely thrilled to see the increase in Rotherham schools successfully accredited for The Rotherham Anti-Bullying Award. This year we had 39 school awards to present, up from 22 the previous year. Our continued partnership with Rotherham Schools Improvement Service has seen many more schools accessing our provision who are proud to share their good anti-bullying practice.

We have already started to make exciting plans for next year’s awards ceremony and hope to see even more schools and young people celebrating their successes and achievements.'

The theme: Change Starts With Us -Small change. Big difference.

Whether it is verbal, physical, online or in-person, bullying has a significant impact on a child’s life well in to adulthood. By making small, simple changes, we can break this cycle and create a safe environment for everyone. Because together, we can challenge bullying. Change starts with a conversation. It starts with checking in. It starts with work together.

Change starts here.

Change starts now.

Change starts with us.
